Still more Mars Designs

Here are a few more early designs for Mars.  They are not the final design, but were a part of the early exploration.  For the exo-suit, a great design by Dermot Power was chosen, and the Nanny Robot was a collaboration between Landis Fields and I.

More Mars Needs Moms artwork

There were a number artists working on the Martian Rocket, trying to find what the director wanted. The ship in the show was designed by Darren Bacon, who did a great job.  Below are two of my ships.

Here is a sheet of some of the explorations.

Can’t have a rocket without a rocket silo.

Mars Needs Moms Artwork part 3

The extractor was a set at the end of the movie that held Milo’s mom.  It was solar powered, which gives Milo until Sunrise to save her.  Below is the key frame painting I did after final design was determined. I will take this chance to walk through a selection of the design work it took to get to the final.

Step 2: Design each element then recompose into model sheets. (Click image)

Lastly, do key frames such as below and the top image.

More Art for Mars

I’m not sure if this made it in the final cut of the film, but there was a point where Milo was discovered by a floating camera robot.

Here is the final artwork. Landis Fields did an incredible model and unfolding animation for this guy.

Below are the process sketches.

Art of Mars Needs Moms

A movie I worked on is out and that means I can show some of my art.  I will show the final design and a selection of the process designs and images that lead up to that.  This is going to take a while, so look for future posts in the future.

The first is the martian citadel.  Not only did I get to design it from scratch, but I got to work on some of the matte paintings from this set.

Next is 3cat.  Once Milo gets home he builds his own 2cat out of toys and stuff found around the house.

Here’s the early versions.  Click for more options.

Exquisite Corpse

Late last year the comic shop I go to, The Comic Book Box, asked many of it’s patron to take part in an Exquisite Corpse project.  The idea is that someone writes a page along a predetermined theme. That one page script is given to an illustrator without any knowledge of the page before and after.  I was lucky to get a page written by a friend Alberto Melendez.

I currently commute to work on a bus, which is a great time to do small projects like this.  The above image is the final and below is my process sketches.  All the process drawings were done on the bus, and the final texturing and coloring was done over a couple lunches.

Find Kathy’s comic store on facebook. http://www.facebook.com/posted.php?id=235323037311#!/pages/Comic-Book-Box/235323037311

It’s a gem of a shop!  I’ve been going there since the forth grade.

Enter the Ninja

I found this post today that had me laughing. A backyard ninja cutting up plastic bottles doesn’t seem that new, but the details are what hooked me.  A colorful handle, elbow pad on his wrist, an upside down Rockstar sticker… I couldn’t help but do a quick sketch as tribute.  See the video here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujt3rMNoynI

Valentine’s Day

Is this a Valentine’s Day post or another example of how I torture my girls?  While some kids are passing out Icarly cards or Snicker bites, my girls have to hand out unicorns barfing rainbows.  I’m sure there are times when my wife thinks I should take that creative energy and go mow the lawn instead.  he he.

Birthday Card

Birthdays come up so quick.  It feels like I just finished Beatrice’s birthday card from last year.

Holiday Card

Happy Holidays everyone! I hope you have a great one.

A couple of you may recognize this theme from an earlier card I did in 2006.
