It’s this time of the year again when I torture the youngest of my girls with a birthday card. She had requests, but in the end the elephant, monkey and giraffe was difficult to fit in. A big happy birthday to Beatrice!Adding a couple sketches and the rough.

Morrowind Portrait

Back in 2005 I had to back away from playing games and this was the piece that helped me do it. Before Skyrim or Oblivion, there was Morrowind and it was destroying my free time. I wasn’t playing when the family was awake, but I was loosing some major sleep for most of the year so that I could experience everything in this very full and original game. In that time I didn’t make any personal art, so I knew I had to stop. What better way than to to a quick portrait of the character I was playing. Now I am faced with buying Skyrim and need a little reminder of what I have to loose.

I had the chance to do a couple sketches this month. The first was for a great kindergartener that loves Obi-wan from the Clone Wars cartoon. A wise choice. I wish him and his family all the best.

The second sketch was a little thank you gift to local Star Wars fan and fellow Comic Book Box shopper, Steve Sansweet. He led a great tour at his Star Wars museum this last week.

Holiday Card 2011

Happy Holidays everyone. Every year I do an illustrated card to send to friends and family, and although I think some would prefer a photo, I enjoy the thinking the whole family does to come up with the card that represents us. Does that mean we skated through the year? Far from it, but the image feels right. I wish you all the best in the new year.And here is a sketch for a direction Beatrice came up with where we are all owls.

Art of Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster

For Most of 2011, I art directed at Double Fine on Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster. This is a Xbox360 title that was just released to work with the Kinect controler. It was a fantastic opportunity to work with some amazing people on a project that I felt as though was directly for my kids. Although I was managing the artists on the team I also contributed with some concept art. (There’s always Saturdays.) I’ve attached a selection of the finished pieces I did.

Sketchbook Totoro

Here’s a sketch I did while drawing with my girls. They were both drawing images from My Neighbor Totoro, so I drew the girls riding their own Totoro. The sisters in the movie remind me so much of my own girls that it is hard for it not to be my favorite. Choosing a favorite Hayao Miyazaki movie isn’t very fair though. They are all fantastic.

Here are a few more early designs for Mars. They are not the final design, but were a part of the early exploration. For the exo-suit, a great design by Dermot Power was chosen, and the Nanny Robot was a collaboration between Landis Fields and I.

There were a number artists working on the Martian Rocket, trying to find what the director wanted. The ship in the show was designed by Darren Bacon, who did a great job. Below are two of my ships.
